Fikret Adaman

About Me

I am an alumnus of Manchester University (PhD in Economics) and Boğaziçi University (BA and MA in Economics). I am currently a member of the Economics Department at Boğaziçi University. Additionally, I have held various teaching and research positions at diverse universities in Turkey, Europe, and the United States, including Bologna, Erasmus, Purdue, Sabancı, UMASS, and Utah. I have been serving at the European Commission’s expert group on social inclusion since 2009 and have been affiliated with the Istanbul Policy Center since 2020.

My research interests include ecological economics (with an emphasis on ecological conflicts, the political ecology of Turkey, and food policies), political economy (with an emphasis on social policy, governance, and resistance to neoliberalism), and democratic planning and alternative economic organizations (with an emphasis on the calculation debate, participatory planning modalities, the knowledge problem, and cooperatives). For more details, see my CV.

In addition to my academic engagements, I have worked as a consultant for various government agencies and non-profit organizations, providing expert advice on social and environmental policies, sustainable development initiatives, and local governments. I have also been active in various civil organizations. Among these, the Boğaziçi European School of Politics stands out for its aim to contribute to the development of the country’s future political, cultural, and social leaders by emphasizing human rights, the rule of law, pluralism, and European norms and institutions.
I am an enthusiastic hill walker and long-distance runner, and I am interested in photography (see a small portfolio of mine).
